Early bird registration is now being accepted for Connecting Leaders: Learning for Changing Times. The BCPVPA's annual conference will take place Oct. 18-20 in Richmond (at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel). The confirmed keynote speakers are Liz Wiseman, author of Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter and David Warlick, author of four books on instructional technology. Both keynote speakers will also lead follow-up breakout sessions. In addition, there will be a variety of breakout sessions led by  BC educators. All sessions will address at least one of the conference strands: technology; social media; community engagement; global context; British Columbia leadership; school structures to support learning; work/life balance; and teaching and student learning.

BCPVPA 2012 Election for Directors

Nominations Closed: Election by e-balloting May 29 to 31

Nominations are now closed for this year’s BCPVPA election for members of the Board of Directors. BCPVPA members will elect five members of the Board of Directors to two-year terms and one member for a one-year term. The timeline for the election is as follows:

  • Nominations are now closed.
  • Candidates will speak at the Chapter Council meeting May 12.
  • A special issue of eNews with candidate statements will be published on May 18.
  • The election for directors will take place from May 29-31, with the results announced on June 1.
  • All terms begin July 1, 2012.

Members of the BCPVPA Board whose terms end on June 30 are: Laurie Birnie, Rod Giles, Brian Jackson, Elaine McVie and Jim Mah. Members will also elect one member to a one-year term to replace Reid Findlay who has resigned from the Board, effective June 30. The five candidates with the greatest number of votes assume two-year terms while the candidate with the sixth highest number of votes assumes the one-year term.

Short Course 2012: A challenging and rewarding week

Space is filling quickly as individuals and districts continue to block space for the 35th annual BCPVPA/UBC Short Course, July 9-13 at UBC. This five-day program is an excellent opportunity for newly-appointed and experienced principals and vice-principals. Newly-appointed principals and vice-principals will immerse themselves in challenging and rewarding studies about their roles while building a network of colleagues. Experienced school leaders will find the week an invigorating learning experience. The program includes presentations by skilled BC practitioners, a half-day session on the legal context of roles, duties and responsibilities, facilitated discussions, breakout sessions and informal networking.

Supporting the introduction of full-day Kindergarten

The Ministry of Education, in partnership with the British Columbia Principals’ & Vice-Principals’ Association and the British Columbia Primary Teachers’ Association has developed a series of exemplar videos for principals, vice-principals, teachers and district staff. Developed as a supplement to the Full Day Kindergarten Program Guide, the videos provide insightful examples of rich, age-appropriate activities and learning environments for kindergarten students. The Leadership Standards for Principals and Vice-Principals in British Columbia

The BCPVPA has now published the Leadership Standards for Principals and Vice-Principals in British Columbia. The intended purpose of the leadership standards is to provide a framework for professional preparation and growth of aspiring and practicing principals and vice-principals. The structure of the leadership standards describe effective, observable leadership actions which can be used for self-assessment, self-reflection and as the basis for personal professional growth planning.

The purpose of this document is for the fostering of continuous professional learning in working towards effective leadership. It is not intended as an instrument for evaluation or the judgement of the individual performance of principals and vice-principals by districts. The Standards as they are written do not lend themselves to evaluation procedures as they are generic, context dependent and aspirational.
